Every year there are one, two, and maybe even three occurrences of a certain date- Friday the 13th. Many people expect this day to be filled with bad luck and unfortunate situations. Some have experiences these issues, while others find it a laughing matter. So here's the question: Are the unfortunate situations on Friday the 13th just coincidences or is there are a greater and darker force in the world making those things happen?
There is actually a word that describes the fear of Friday the 13th as a day of horrifying ordeals- paraskevidekatriaphobia. It is not fully determined how this date was dubbed to be unlucky for some, but it is assumed that it came from the painting The Last Supper, which pictured 13 people sitting at a table the day before before Jesus was crucified, which was on a Friday. Supposedly, the last person to sit down at that table was Judas, one of Jesus's followers, who betrayed Jesus. But is this thought just a religious one? Is there more to it? What if people thousands of years ago picked the number 13 and said, "Yup. That's going to be the unlucky number," just to have something to blame for their problems? What if this day was created to be able to blame when something bad happened? Or, because it is perceived as a bad day, people are nervous and are more likely to make mistakes and get injured or "unlucky"? What could be a plausible answer? In places like Italy and China and for people like Taylor Swift, 13 is actually considered a lucky number, not the other way around.
Whether you believe in this suspicion or not, it is no secret that bad things do happen to people on this date of every year. Here's a few:
A man named Daz Baxter was so terrified of something happening to him on this date of 1976 that he stayed in bed all day, only to die when the apartment building floor collapsed.
Citizens of the UK had their personal computers hacked by a virus on Friday, January 13, 1989.
Five bombs struck Buckingham Palace, as ordered by Hitler, on September 13, 1940.
So, maybe Friday the 13th is unlucky. My thoughts are that it is just coincidental; people are pretty much waiting around for something bad to happen, therefore are more careful. But by doing so, they make silly mistakes and end up hurting themselves, others, or just screwing something up during that day.
Has anything bad ever happened to you on a Friday the 13th? Are you afraid of this particular day? I just know I'll be glad when the day is over.
